The centre started playing its major role in educating adult learners dated back from 1973 when UiTM (previously known as ITM) started venturing into off-campus educational programs. 

The external Education Centre was established in 1990 with the aim to provide opportunities for working adults to further and obtain a quality tertiary education. In order to keep abreast with the current needs for global education, the centre was rebranded by the name of Institute of NEO Education (iNED) University Teknologi MARA, focussing on providing innovative educational approach to working adults.
